Software Engineer, Graduate or Post Graduate

Job Purpose
Working for the global number one provider of server based cryptographic security systems at the Company's Cambridge headquarters you will participate in the creation of a growing portfolio of products that already includes a diverse range of network appliances and PCI hardware security modules. nCipher also produces a range of software developer kits and value added applications that provide innovative solutions to real world business problems such as secure digital time stamping, enterprise level cryptographic key management and secure Internet PIN delivery.
nCipher has an exciting, innovative research and development team that's involved in full lifecycle product development: though specification, design, implementation and test of software systems for complex security critical applications. You will be programming in one or more of C, Java and Python on a range of modern computing platforms, well supported throughout by training programs and mentoring schemes.
Main Accountabilities:
- To design, develop and test software modules to meet the product requirements specified by Product Management under the direction of the Project Manager and Lead Engineer.
- To work within processes and procedures to ensure the integrity and robustness of all software deliverables and to be proactive in reporting progress, risks and problems encountered to the Project Manager.
- To contribute to the writing of lifecycle documentation, provide input to user documentation, technical application notes and training material.
- To contribute to the generation of reliable estimates of task duration and feasibility/evaluation activities.
- To provide reliable, timely and accurate technical assistance to first line support staff on issues relating to the use of nCipher's products, when appropriate.
- To keep abreast of technical and market trends in relation to the company's product range.
- Participate in the review of documentation, software and specifications as required.
Qualifications:
- A First or Upper Second degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or other relevant disciplines.
Applications from 2005 or 2006 graduates welcomed
Knowledge
- A good working knowledge of the C and optionally Python and/or Java programming languages
- An understanding of programming for multiple platforms and environments including UNIX and Windows based operating systems.
- An appreciation for the use of, and interest in, cryptography in IT security
- An awareness of Internet technologies, protocols and standards.
- An understanding of at least one scripting language.
Experience
Experience of some of the following would be an advantage:
- Proven interest in software development outside of course work or direct work experience
- Embedded systems programming and microprocessor based digital hardware design
- Cryptography and computer security techniques
- An appreciation of designing IT systems for usability
- Internet software application development
- Electronic commerce / web services
- The use of formal software testing procedures and system
- Graphical User Interface Design / Implementation

- The ability to analyse complex technical problems and offer innovative, reasoned and practical solutions to demanding requirements.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
