miniHSM

A FIPS 140-2 level 3 validated platform for OEMs that require an embedded hardware security module for products performing cryptographic operations or seeking to protect critical information

Overview

Component sized cryptographic security module for OEMs

Cryptographic security is a fundamental element of protecting sensitive information, but for OEMs to develop a cryptographic component for their solutions with high security specifications, introduces risk, additional cost, and delayed time to market. Developing a cryptographic subsystem that can be validated to stringent cryptographic security standards such as FIPS 140-2 requires specialized skills and a significant investment of time to achieve product validation.

The miniHSM is an embedded hardware module that has been validated to FIPS 140-2 Level 3, a widely recognized security benchmark for cryptographic modules. This provides OEMs with a secure, simple, drop-in solution to provide data encryption, digital signing, and strong authentication within a broad range of products.  The miniHSM provides developers with an attractive alternative to in-house development and creates the opportunity to leverage nCipher's unique application security and key management technology.

nCipher’s miniHSM supports a wide range of cryptographic algorithms, including all common symmetric- and asymmetric-key cryptographic algorithms (including 3DES, AES, RSA, DH etc.) as well as more specialist algorithms such as Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) . Incorporating a true random number generator, the miniHSM offers secure cryptographic key provisioning and storage, and a built-in real-time clock enables value-added functionality such as time-stamping in addition to the standard cryptographic functions of encryption, digital signing and authentication.  Additionally, the miniHSM supports for nCipher’s suite of developer toolkits including CodeSafe its unique Secure Execution Engine (SEE) capability for executing high assurance trusted custom applications within the device’s security boundary.

Typical applications for miniHSM include:

  • Secure audit
  • Protection of cryptographic keys
  • Time stamping
  • Non-repudiatable signatures
  • Digital certificate issuance
  • High integrity security applications
  • High-end DRM enforcement
